Engel & Völkers has a long history, originating in Hamburg, Germany. The company's foundations were laid when Dirk C. Engel founded Engel & Cie in December 1977. As an exclusive representative of an American brokerage firm, he sold real estate to German investors in the center of Hamburg. Several years later, Dirk C. Engel and Christian Fölkers decided to open a brokerage firm in the suburbs of Hamburg on the Elbe. The first business premises were a villa on the historic Elbchaussee boulevard, the facade of which is still an integral part of the iconic brand logo. The two founders continued to develop the real estate business, which revolutionized the industry from scratch.
